Life in Singapore is unimaginable with an air conditioner. I’m sure everyone runs the aircon every day 24×7. But not everyone understands that this could impact the aircon’s performance, decreasing its lifespan and effectiveness. However, you don’t need a technician to solve all aircon-related problems – you can fix them on your own.

1. Short Cycling:
Sometimes, components are overheated because of insufficient airflow into the ac. This causes the air conditioner to shut down abruptly. This could happen because of a faulty thermostat or clogged condensate pipes. If the ac turns on and off frequently, you are probably experiencing short cycling.
If the air conditioner is oversized for the room, it could cool the room too fast, causing the aircon to shut down. Some of the other reasons for the air conditioner to shut off include installing the thermostat in the wrong location, low refrigerant levels, etc.
Check if the ac vent is open and unobstructed to allow the air to freely enter and exit the vent. Clean the air filter if it is clogged and dirty. As for the condensate ducts, you can clean the line in the indoor unit by pouring distilled vinegar into the tube (after removing the cap) and flushing the pipe with water after 30 minutes. Call the aircon servicing technician if the problem persists.
2. The Aircon Isn’t Cooling The Room Effectively:
There could be multiple reasons for ineffective performance. It could be due to a faulty component, refrigerant leak, or simply because the ac is undercharged. If you notice that the air conditioner isn’t cooling effectively, or if the air smells odd, it could be due to low refrigerant. Without sufficient refrigerant, it’s difficult to remove the humidity from the room, giving that foul smell.

3. The Thermostat Isn’t Working Properly:
If the air conditioner isn’t turning on, it is probably because the thermostat isn’t working properly. Try adjusting the temperature to low as possible to check if the problem is resolved. If it still doesn’t work, it’s best to call the technician to figure out the issue and suggest fixing or replacing the thermostat. Sometimes, programming the thermostat helps resolve the problem, but you should read the manual before reprogramming.
4. The Fan Is Noisy:
The fan inside the ac blows air on the evaporator coil to cool the air. The condenser also helps move the heat outside the house – the noise that you hear from the ac typically comes from the motor and the fan. If the fan seems extra loud, it is probably because of dirt build-up. Sometimes, worn-out belts and bearings may cause a loud noise. If the noise persists, call us for aircon servicing.
